Supporting Edmonton’s Food Bank, Parkland Country Food Bank and AdaptAbilities
As part of Amazon’s commitment to the community, the event included donations of essential items to Edmonton’s Food Bank, AdaptAbilities, and Parkland County Food Bank, three organizations making a significant local impact.
Hyman joined Amazon employees to present the donations, highlighting the importance of supporting organizations that provide food security, disability programming, and critical family support services – especially during the holiday season, when demand on local charities is at its peak.
Following the presentation, Hyman stepped onto the floor to see what peak operations look like inside the massive 2.4 million-square-foot facility.
Inside YEG2 During Peak Season
Hyman’s tour offered a behind-the-scenes look at the scale of YEG2’s operations, where hundreds of employees work together alongside Amazon Robotics to fulfil hundreds of thousands of orders for customers. He visited the robotics floor, learned how teams coordinate during peak season, and saw how customer orders are fulfiled from start to finish.
He didn’t stay on the sidelines for long. Hyman quickly jumped in at multiple stations, helping sort, pack, and even autograph packages, giving some lucky customers an unexpected holiday surprise.
Q&A: Zach Hyman
To round out the visit, we sat down with Hyman for a quick Q&A about his work in the community, holiday traditions, and what motivates him both on and off the ice.
- What’s one moment in your career that’s stayed with you? The most memorable moment of my career so far has to be going to the Stanley Cup finals. Last year I was injured, so I didn't play, but the year before scoring a goal at home in game 6 to set it to game 7 was pretty incredible and memorable.
- Best gift you’ve ever received — or given? The best gift I've ever received was for my eighth or ninth birthday. My birthday is in June, and I woke up, and I looked outside my window, and my parents had painted the entire driveway as a hockey rink and invited all my friends over. We had the birthday party out in our front yard, on the driveway, and I just remember having a blast with my friends and just being so surprised.
- Do you have any holiday rituals or traditions with family? There'sa lot. I would say my favourite holiday tradition with the family is going to the movies and spending time together. When I was little, we would all go to Palm Springs and visit my grandparents who lived there, and we would always go to the movies and have dinner on Christmas Day, and it was apretty specialtradition.
- If Amazon could deliver one holiday “superpower” to help with your season, which would you pick and why?I think if Iwasgranted an Amazon superpower, it would be endless energy. I have three young boys - almost five, three, and one - and to deal with three boys, you need endless energy, sothatsuperpower would be very handy.
